History

Started in Nanjing in 1906 as Jinan Academy under the authorization of Guangxu Emperor of Qing Dynasty, Jinan University has witnessed its own ups and downs along with the vicissitudes of modern China. At the beginning, Jinan Academy was established to recruit overseas Chinese students in order to spread the sophisticated Chinese culture to the outside world especially to the Southeast Asian nations and thus strengthen the emotional ties with overseas Chinese.

After years of hardwork of both students and faculties, Jinan Academy was renamed Jinan National University and moved to Shanghai. During this period, Jinan embraced its first shining times. Many scholars and experts with great reputation served this university including Ma Yinchu, Zheng Zhenduo, Liang Shiqiu, Qian Zhongshu and so on. Jinan’s fame was acknowledged both home and abroad.

During the Word War II, Jinan National University temporarily moved to Jianyang, Fujian Province and later moved back to Shanghai after the war. However, Jinan was closed and merged into other universities after 1949. In 1958, Jinan was reopened as an independent institution and finally settled down in Guangzhou, the largest city of south China.

Jinan University is among the first to offer graduate programs and award degrees in China since the reform and opening-up. As early as in 1979, Jinan began to recruit postgraduate students and offer graduate programs. In 1981, Jinan was authorized to confer degrees. After decades of development, Jinan’s graduate education has achieved great progress in the innovation and cultivation of graduate programs. The past several decades has witnessed the increase of both student’s and degree’s amount. Since then, especially after the reform and opening-up, Jinan has entered the fast lane of development. Supported by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province Government, Jinan has played spearheading roles in China’s higher education: it is the first university in China that recruits foreign students; it is the first university that pioneered the implementation of credit system in China; it is the university with the largest number of overseas students; and it is the only university that finds her alumni in both Chinese and foreign state-level leaders in China.

In 2011, Graduate School of Jinan University was established. At present, Jinan is in possession of 6 level-I doctoral disciplines and 39 level-II doctoral disciplines, covering 54 majors of PhD programs. In addition, 125 master programs in 18 level-I disciplines are available, and there are 6 categories of professional degrees. Moreover, 6 post-doctoral mobile research centers are offering fine research and living conditions for those who want to have more wide exchange of knowledge.
